For our May meeting, we are delighted to welcome back Tony Jinks, who last spoke for UFOR nine years ago.
Tony has been a senior lecturer in the Discipline of Psychological Science ACAP University College since 2022 and teaches cognitive science and advanced statistical methods. His research focus is the psychology of anomalous belief and experience, and modes of consciousness.
He critiques simplistic interpretations of paranormal beliefs, challenging mainstream psychological assumptions.
The Phenomenology of Haunts:
An assessment of “bottom-up” versus “top-down” perspectives to several supernatural Australian locations.
The talk will provide, a general background to traditional and contemporary theories of hauntings. In particular their rationalisation, as a relatively consistent psychological reaction to environmental factors, such as fluctuations in natural or artificial energy at alleged haunted sites.
Anomalous events, associated with three locations in close proximity to the Blue Mountains, are compared in the context of geophysical and other natural variables present, leading to a re-assessment of the role of phenomenology in the haunting experience.
